|
| Turtles are reptiles whose body
is shielded by a special bony or
cartilaginous shell developed from
their rips. The earliest known
turtles date from 215 million years
ago, making turtles on of the oldest
reptile groups. About 300 species
are alive today, and some are highly
endangered. Turtles cannot breathe
in water, but they can hold their
breath for various period of time.
Although many turtles spend large
amount of their lives underwater,
all turtles and tortoises breathe
air and must surface at regular
intervals to refill their lungs.
Turtles lay eggs, like other
reptile, which are soft and
leathery. |
